Full Day Excursion – ‘The Loveliest Place in the World’
After breakfast, we make our way to Agatha Christie’s stunning Georgian mansion, Greenway House and Garden (open Wed. to Sun.), situated in the heart of the English Riviera. The house contains extensive collections belonging to the late ‘whodunnit’ author and her family and it is easy to see why she referred to it as ‘the loveliest place in the world’. Agatha Christie’s boathouse is located on the river bank and was the scene of the crime in ‘Dead Man’s Folly’, the final episode of the television drama, ‘Poirot’, which was filmed here in 2013. We may decide to have lunch in the House Kitchen before making our way to Torre Abbey with its prestigious permanent art collection and Agatha Christie’s Potent Plants Display.
Full Day Excursion – Art Deco Living and a Gilbert & Sullivan Connection
We will travel to the 1920s Arts and Crafts mansion, Coleton Fishacre, a remarkable Art Deco retreat that was built by the wealthy D’Oyly Carte family (erstwhile owners of The Savoy Hotel and the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company) in the 1920s. The house is nestled within a beautiful 24 acre estate with gardens that border the sea, and the interior of the house is quite unique, packed full of fascinating artefacts that are highly evocative of the period in which the house originated. We may choose to have lunch at Coleton Fishacre before making our way to Goodrington Sands (easy access), weather permitting, where we can relax on the sandy beach with an ice-cream and admire the stunning views before returning to our hotel in time for dinner. Alternatively, if the weather is not on our side, we will visit the Torquay Museum.
Free Day – The Agatha Christie Mystery Walk
An opportunity to take a gentle walk along the ‘Agatha Christie Mile’ on the Torquay seafront and harbour area. There are clues at 8 landmarks that will help us to work out the name of a character in one of her books. This truly is an excellent means of getting to know Torquay from the famous novelist’s perspective. You may choose to linger at any one of the interesting locations and enjoy a day in this beautiful harbour town at your leisure.
Full Day Excursion – ‘Dartmouth Steam Train & River Cruise’
This morning, we travel to the Dartmouth Steam Railway at Queens Park Station, Paignton, for a 30 minute steam train journey to Kingswear, which offers breathtaking views of the coastline and picturesque Devonshire countryside. Once in Kingswear, our foot passenger ferry transports us across the River Dart to Dartmouth from where we enjoy a 1 hour circular river cruise, passing fantastic scenery including Kingswear & Dartmouth. Castles, Dittisham village, Britannia Royal Naval College and Greenway House. Once back in Dartmouth, we have time at leisure before boarding our return ferry and steam train back to Paignton.
We sometimes make changes to journeys and excursion in response to adverse weather conditions, road repairs, road congestion and other local factors. In these circumstances the driver/company will exercise discretion reasonably having all due consideration to the relevant factors and as a result there may be changes to the planned journey.
